>got my first microcontroller, an ESP32 >the toolchain is a schizophrenic mess of various python and bash scripts held together with glue and cotton candy >you HAVE to use cmake >you HAVE to use a python script to build your project >if you make one change to cmakelists then the ENTIRE toolchain is rebuilt Are all microcontroller toolchains this dogshit?

>Are all microcontroller toolchains this dogshit? There's a reason that arduino was so popular. For all of its (many) faults, setup is a breeze compared to most industry solutions. No, I will not install your multi-gigabyte tool chain and shitty eclipse fork that I have to make an account to download. No, I will not buy your overpriced external programmer. There's no excuse in this day and age to not have a tiny self contained toolchain, and no excuse for any moderately powerful chip to not be directly flashable over USB. For chips/debugging without USB, there's no excuse for the tool to cost more than a few dollars. It's weird how the industry manages to merge the worst parts of 90s corporate lockdown with the worst parts of modern software bloat. More weird is how butthurt professionals get when you point it out.
