On Monday last the City Coroner held an inquest at the Royal Arms, Liberty Plains (11 miles from Sydney), on view of the dead body of an illegitimate female infant. The evidence taken, of which, through the courtesy of the Coroner, an abstract is appended, disclosed a state of depravity, within a short distance of Sydney, almost incredible. The infant was the offspring of a Chinaman named Dick, and a young girl named Eliza Davis. Joseph Davis deposed : I am a woodcutter, and reside on Liberty Plains. I am married, and have six children alive, all daughters, the eldest of whom is 23 years of age. I am the father of Eliza Davis, a single girl 21 years of age. She was born in Sydney. She has never been to school; she used to go to church. She has lived with me since she was born until the last few months. I was aware that she was cohabiting with the Chinaman who lived in the house with me. She has had a child before by another Chinaman. That child is now alive and well.⏱ 19h↩
