Your timeline is BS. There was quite a build up for Gemma 4, especially in the two weeks before its official release. It got previewed as a "stealth model" on (LM) Arena ("pteronura" and "significant-otter"), and in retrospect it's obvious that Google used a site-specific prompt that made the model reveal its name (Gemma) and origin, if you asked. People were looking for any possible breadcrumb of information on X and elsewhere. The possible release of a "124B" version came first from a rando there, then Jeff Dean from DeepMind.⏱ 6d↩
