As a matter of fact, I wanted to read the Kalevala regardless and I was looking into which translation was best--that is how I stumbled onto Pekkanen's translation to begin with. At any rate, in the introduction he starts by citing scholarly articles on the Kalevala, and then proceeds to describe Finnish meter and why he believes that Latin matches it well--which is exactly the type of autism I like in a translator. The actual poem is kicking my butt though. The syntax is simple, but the vocabulary is pretty broad (or at least broader than what I am used to), so for now I am leaving it aside. It reads quite nicely nonetheless, do if any anon wants to read it I can wholeheartedly recommended it. The link is in my original post.
