Digging stuff out of the deep earth is easier than setting up a colony on Mars, sending heavy equipment there AND enough people to run the operation, mining that shit out, and then sending it back. See above, do you understand the complexity of maintaining a Mars operation that can use those resources effectively or ship them back to Earth to be used effectively? We have immense unexploited reserves of everything we need here on Earth, it's just not economically feasible to exploit them *at this moment*. The first years or decades will be exploration while shipping millions of tons of materials over there including robots. The first resource priority will be turning energy into fuel.
