𓀐 @ppJSw~p8: I've read that the big bang and the expansion of the universe should be thought of as the expanding surface of an inflating balloon. But I've also read that the the curvature of space has been found to be basically flat. Is the universe big enough that any curvature gets lost in the rounding error, or is my understanding of these topics too superficial?+

𓀐 @DBKiE3bu: If the tectonic plates are moving at a certain level of pressure against each other, because of expected flows of magma, in such a way that we can predict how the continents are going to move for millions of years in the future, wouldn't it be possible to eventually correct for that movement and build ratchets or some form of expected notches for the plates to click along, so as to make the plates move like gears in a clock and nearly nullify massive unpredictable earthquakes in the future? You…+

𓀐 @7f-?pSvS: Could someone clue me in real quick or does this question deserve its own thread: to my understanding, QFT is usually only done perturbatively, and from what I can tell, can only deal with asymptotically free particles. Any bound system as simple as the Hydrogen atom ought to effectively break this approach because an electron trapped forever obviously violates the asymptotic assumption. Has there ever been any progress made for that? My background is QM of bound systems and scattering problems…+

𓀐 @m9TGJmAD: If matter is mostly empty space how does a particle know when its going faster than light in water and emit Cherenkov radiation? How if there are two immiscible fluids one on top of the other and particle is traveling top down will the particle emit cherenkov radiation twice once in the first fluid and again when it enters the second fluid if the speed of light in the second fluid is less than the first? How thick must the fluid be for the particle to be required to emit the light, or if the fl…+

𓀐 @D4YUYEFF: How do you prove that a magnet based perpetual motion machine is impossible? In many of the fake videos, the basic idea is that a magnet enters in the vicinity of another magnet in such a way that it leaves the magnetic field of the other magnet with more energy than it took to enter it. And this is achieved by orienting the magnets and their fields just the right way. >dah the conservation of energy Yes but is there a deeper mathematical proof why the magnetic machine is impossible that doesn'…+
