>AI this >AI that Who gives a shit, why are we not talking about the actual important things, huh? Is there anybody here that still gives a shit about freedom and privacy in computing? Like the US KIDS act and EU KIDS act for example or all the other regulations in all kinds of other countries (all similar and at same time globally I am sure it's a coincidence right) whose purpose is to make it impossible to use any computer which runs an operating system or any website or other internet service without identifying yourself by using either a document or a government app, and of course this means that you will not be able to develop and distribute any of that without having to become an enforcer of this system, and don't think it only applies to kids because it you don't identify yourself you will be treated as a minor automatically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfMB6yzAxKA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KIDS_Act https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EU_Kids_Act

𓀐 @HnW-N2NE: >why are we not talking about the actual important things, huh? Is there anybody here that still gives a shit about freedom and privacy in computing? Because when you say "freedom", that "freedom" comes at the cost of children's safety. That's not a freedom I want.+ 1

𓀐 @=*yy3wcE: Problem with that is that this doesn't just affect social media, it affects any operating system, application or web service, no matter the size, if you don't verify yourself you will be automatically categorized as a minor and get at restricted experience. This will definitely kill 4chan, funnily enough the big tech platform like social media will have all the tools to comply with the regulations, most of it is already implemented, it will be the medium and small websites and projects that will be fucked over the most, no more anonimity for you either.+ 3

𓀐 @S2FtMkHS: What's stopping me from making a website that doesn't comply with their regulations? What, are they going to aggressively take me down? Better prepare for a whole new influx of people coming over to the dark web then!+ 1

𓀐 @eS4kndN9: the legal famework to even begin to try to enforce any of this this has more holes than swiss cheese. the focus will be on the big players in tech/social media because they have the biggest money and liability painted on their backs. it will get tied up in years of lawsuits and injunctions from every litigator under the sun, and the little guy will continue to ride in the margins just like is already happening with state age laws, just like is going on several decades with music industry kikes and dmca, just like what happened in prohibition, just like what happened in fucking roman sumptuary laws. we love to signal civic virtues while leaving the root behavior unaddressed and impossible to enforce because there's one public servant shaneequa for every thousand violators and she's more interested in doing her nails that morning than writing up a bad goy rap sheet for you specifically. and no I am not anonymous but it literally doesn't matter, my ssn dob name address credit history are all out there and leaked and nobody cares. my isp is more than happy to take my money and shut the fuck up. nothing ever happens+

𓀐 @6caGgqcy: I am not a burger but I can tell bullshit, police LOVES to go at the small guy that can't defend themselve and HATES going against the big guys that are organized and have connections, it's the same everywhere in the world. This will go like war on drugs, you will be sent to prison for hosting a forum without age verification systems, meanwhile the big guys like Meta or X will setup those systems and collaborate or bribe the authorities.+

𓀐 @zeSb?W=C: I'm learning to not care because the people who piss and moan about any type of account, or hell even being forced use a modern web browser are legitimately mentally ill. I used to be muh privacy advocate until I grew up and realized the people proclaiming their ID is so precious they wouldn't upload it anywhere, just don't live in the real world. On top of their general behavior.+

𓀐 @KWDb_GLL: >whose purpose is to make it impossible to use any computer which runs an operating system or any website or other internet service without identifying yourself by using either a document or a government app First of all, EU Kids act does not literally require you to identify yourself to anyone, in fact it specifies zero-knowledge proofs as a necessity for whichever age verification implementation gets approved. The EU digital identity wallet runs an open source, zero-knowledge proof token generator to maximize privacy. The government can't know what you're using your token for, the website can't trace who issued the token. They've implemented plenty of measures to make it theoretically impossible to fingerprint you. This process is very benign compared to what websites usually require you to do, e.g. uploading a picture of your face or ID. In fact, it's telling websites like X.com that they're not allowed to age-proof their content with methods that compromise someone's anonymity. Ironically enough, KIDS Act enforces privacy. Secondly, in the case that the law passes through parliament, it will see several major revisions that would very likely make concessions for specific types of software, including non-commercial distros. All that said, you can still criticize the regulation for a myriad of reasons other than what is stated above. However, you (and many others) are arguing from a poor premise, so let's get that straight. Kids watching pornography is just convenient collateral. The EU KIDS act primarily addresses access to social media by children, so the fear porn (pun unintended) here is moreso about social media addiction, grooming and political extremism among youth than literal porn. Repos are exempt. Offline games are exempt. Steam will do the heavily lifting for developers, so online games are safe.+ 1

𓀐 @Ns6HYW_*: The site is full of undisclosed advertisers promoting aislop everywhere and election tourists who probably unironically think laws like this are good things, so of course few people are left that care about freedom. Most people who care about freedom hen libertarianism got chased out and ostracized from 4chan and replaced with this bizarre hybrid of nunazism and conservatism with a lust for being a salve to an authoritarian regime. I can tell before even looking at a single reply post that this thread is going to have multiple people in it claiming the KIDS act is a good thing that only pedophile rapist serial killer communist trannies would oppose and using the presence of an anime image on 4chan as proof positive of their inane claims.+ 1

𓀐 @C8xyPDZA: IDs in the US are the primary way you have to do most any official business with the state (individual state, not federal). It's also how businesses ID you, Epic is an electronic health record system and ID is just one of documents needed to deal with Medicaid and heath insurance. Every time you get a job there is a form called the I9 used to identify that you are a US citizen or are authorized to work. IDs are also kept in record when doing background checks. These used to be done physically but they are all digital now so an ID is likely stored somewhere. I'm more fascinated as to why it seems controversial that an ID is presented and might kept somewhere, in the US it's pretty normal and understood that an ID itself while unpleasant to be leaked, is of little consequence and presents not much more info than if you used a real name and address to buy something on Amazon. Your SSN/TIN is where real consequences are but that's only ever presented seldomly relating to tax or income.+
