𓀐 @Pm3bUTj?: If I want to install some github slop software that I think it's cool, but I don't want to install directly on my system because that's retarded, what can I do about it? I remember I had sandboxie on Windows, does Linux has anything like that?+

𓀐 @fXJT9riW: What would you recommend to a newb who >Needs a distro for college assignments >Plans to dual-boot along side windows 11 >Only has 250GB internal disk drive >Is getting on a plane shortly I'm not that person, she's my cousin. I would like to avoid snapd and mint, but I feel like Ubuntu and Mint are good starter points. I don't like I have enough time to setup and configure Fedora.+

𓀐 @97GCfBR3: I installed Gentoo for the first time. Oddly satifying, even if it took a few hours. It's kind of obvious but having to sit through compilation is such a good motivator to actually learn and customize your system to your needs. You really feel it when you are compiling dist-kernel and you see a bunch of shit you know you don't need. It's so glaring I'm not sure I would be comfortable going back to a non-source based distro.+

𓀐 @vSWx*9hy: I've been wanting to move to linux for months, maybe even a year now but I never do because I'm afraid I'll have do use something that is windows only and then be forced to format back to windows and also that I wouldn't like the linux settings. so I was thinking, I should just make a VM with cachyos on this windows machine and use it until I get used to it, get all settings and configurations done and then save the cfg files and install linux bare metal. But the actual question I have is: how…+

𓀐 @nUqrTkyZ: Coming from Windows as a refugee, after not liking Zorin OS, I'm now two weeks into using Arch Linux. The learning experience so far has actually been fun, and it's surprisingly stable as a daily driver. It sounds odd to say about Arch, but so far everything just works - gaming, daily tasks, etc. I have it almost where I want it to be, but no OS will ever be 100% perfect and tinker-proof. My only main question I have for the Arch users - how often do you use Flatpak? I have 8 installed programs…+

𓀐 @_sGPQfwz: Legitimately one other random question - if Arch is my only OS on my drive, is there a point to a bootloader?+

𓀐 @C3sE2yBz: Now that KDE is forcing Wayland, how do I deal with the performance losses from XWayland, especially in games? Not all games support Proton's native wayland+

𓀐 @zJaby9H~: God fucking damn it. I thought KDE deprecating X11 support meant that they'd finally fixed all of the gayland bullshit, but no, I've had to reboot my machine 4 times now in not even in as many days after updating because my screens became unresponsive (and lost game progress) after alt-tabbing, my monitors can't come back correctly after going to sleep, and I got this retarded fucking "screen broken" screen immediately after updating. I get not wanting to maintain two code bases, but they shoul…+

𓀐 @CaZTVGtz: isnt it funny how the two main desktop environments, plasma and gnome, removed their x11 sessions but all their apps still support x11 we are still years aways from the wayland switch actually happening+ 1

𓀐 @pNQzVY_n: Nvidia isn't some niche vendor. If the largest GPU vendor didn't work on the old solution, either, that'd be one thing, but a DE vendor really should pay attention to whether or not their decision to support a backend or not negatively impacts a significant amount of users. It's easy to say "my NEW solution is perfect, the world just needs to adopt it", but it's not a reasonable stance when you deliver software downstream of that.+

𓀐 @o?BBvtR3: Is it better to use a literally who meme distro just to avoid systemd? Wouldn't that actually be less secure? Specifically, I was thinking of using Peppermint instead of Mint since it doesn't systemd, but it's a literally who distro, so how do I know it's not secretly pozzed. I feel like I should just go with Mint because so many people use it we'd know if it was pozzed beyond systemd.+ 1

𓀐 @epxuKJwb: >what do you want people that isn't nvidia to do about it Not drop working support for something that 56% of users need? They don't have to do anything, everything was working fine on X11. If I actually thought a well-reasoned message would convince KDE to bring back X11 support for Plasma 6.9, I wouldn't be bitching on 4chan. They dropped support, it's a lost cause. >Nvidia is the one that refused to support a standard that was widely adopted. X was (is) also widely adopted. And worked. Yeah i…+

𓀐 @=m7-MbfZ: Well It has been a while since I had some down time to fuck around with loonix and I fired my 8 month old install of Fedora (tips). Tried the adobe clones, both Artcraft and Photon studio, Zen browser and also Steam because I read that it automatically sets up proton for your games with means that I can finally play my pirated games with zero friction which had been a problem before. I must say... Boys, we're ready for the mainstream. Fedora updated to 44 with absolutely no hiccups, the artcraf…+

𓀐 @eDj7b9-~: Best beginner friendly Linux flavor for someone who wants to set up quickly and rarely touch the terminal? Assume someone is trying to leave Windows (not me, I've used Ubuntu since 2007) Is SteamOS's Arch fork open source now? I feel like SteamOS would unironically be the best thing for Windows users given Steam probably wouldn't want users to rely on terminal and has a fully fleshed out system, it'd have proton/wine out of box most likely, and looks to use KDE or Cinnamon so would feel familia…+

𓀐 @gU6nvCUY: I almost flashed my folder with porn to a coworker because for some fucking reason dolphin saves the last folder you used. This is a thing I'm seeing now also with windows 11 and ext programs: they save your folders, sessions and files and I don't understand it. If I click on the X I want to close the thing, I don't want the program to remember, If I open again I want a clean status and then I will open whatever I need. Is there any way of disabling this in cachyos? I'm using kde and dolphin.+
