Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back. >What software should I run? Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Last few parts to my first server are ariving in a few days. I'm quite happy. Uses: Hosting private game servers, VMs, and as a renderslave for my blender animations (running with my main desktop through a manager) Any reason not to run Ubuntu LTS Desktop on it? There's trendy stuff like Pop!OS that I tried before but idk. I'll need Nvidia drivers tho, for the rendering stuff.
