𓀐 @e7iD57mv: >What's the last book you read? The City of Dreaming Books. Very good shit, highly recommend. >What's the current book you're reading? The Amber Spyglass. I love His Dark Materials but this last book is such an acid trip. >What do you plan to read next? Moby-Dick most likely. But in terms of fantasy probably something King Arthur related like The Once and Future King.+

𓀐 @s+2QLFs3: Chapter 1 of Tytania is 6K words. It's entirely about five dukes having a meeting about their military defeat. I'm not sure how the author managed to pad it to 6K words. I did enjoy it. Still find it weird how little happened.+

𓀐 @Nw5NE*5=: Genuine question here. I always hear people complaining about Memory, Sorrow and Thorn being too long winded and also having cuck shit. Is there a comparable fantasy story that avoids these pitfalls? “Classic” fantasy with dragons, history, a bit more modern, etc. that is tight, concise and no cucking? Obviously LOTR is out of the question.+

𓀐 @g?V3MNnG: I like the Dune series but I don't think it has much substance beyond quotable dialogue and worldbuilding. Yes, Paul is a fake god but kipling already did that in the Man Who Would Be King. I can't really get myself to care about anything that happens in the first four books the way hardcore dune fans care. Why should I when every single main character has superpowers that tell them the solution to every problem? The last two are better about having real stakes but they're also the most hated books in the whole series.+

𓀐 @UP8wjJ8b: I don't get it; how can people read 16 novels a year? Apparently, that is the national average. I thought reading was a sort of niche interest.+

𓀐 @5M+dV?r8: >“If you’re fine with it, how about crashing at my flat?” >Fan Hyulick silently stared at the girl’s face, looking at her cheeks flushing beneath the streetlights. >“Don’t get it twisted. We’ll be in separate beds. I live with my grandmother, and she dislikes dissolute morals. A woman must take care of her body when it comes to men.” The last sentence puzzles me. Probably something lost in translation. I presume the implication is that hookup culture corrupts women's bodies, but it is just a really weird expression.+

𓀐 @RFGC3tHv: Read darkstalker over three days. Got embarasingly floored from from what I guess can be called whiplash of not having anything in the way of expectations or maybe just expecting something more action adventure related rather then what I actually got which was a setting largely constrained to nobility court romance. (but they're all dragons) I then get slapped across the face by it also being this tightly executed tragedy romance novel where there's a rolling dread throughout for the reader to bite their lips for as Anakin nightchad over here threads the needle towards being a supervillain inspite of his lover and friend moving heaven and earth to avert exactly that. I think what made this part of story so successful is not so much the story of Darkstalker, but the plight of the three friends who try so hard to turn him from the path of evil. The fact that they are not successful makes it hit richer. (Uh spoiler for a prequel/villian origin story but the titular villian does in fact origin) Setting has certain fantasy-isms to let one know repeatedly that these whole dragon nations have depth that is unseen and trusted to not been needed for the story. It's a tight ship and doesn't have the pages to waste time or effort on going over vestigial information about ther dragon's world outside the limited look at three dragon kingdoms who actually matter at all for this story with the night and ice wings having their war and there being a scattering of seawing politics as well theough the first half since 1/3 of three pov's are of the seawing prince/friend to darkie.+

𓀐 @82JL-7i5: >Count Arses Tytania, the younger brother of Zarlisch Tytania, was 23 years old, with sapphire hair, pale turquoise eyes, and skin as white as chalk. The word “melancholy” seemed written on his face in invisible ink. >Fan Hyulick had averted his gaze towards a statue. It was carved from Ementhal marble and depicted two figures embracing. Sensing that something was amiss, Fan Hyulick observed the statue one more. Once he realised what the source of his unease was, he grew gloomy. The two figures embracing were both male. So, what I figure happened was that when this novel was written in the 80s, the outcast villain was gay, but when anime was adapted in late 00s, they thought making villainous gay guy would be controversial so they "modernized" it by making him tranny instead. Based japs.+

𓀐 @ju+bdDj=: Finished reading pic related. The prose reads like it was written by an alien at times, and Severian is such a milquetoast protagonist. The plot was meandering and yawn inducing. I read Latro in the Mist before this and it was more of the same, except way too repetitive. I don't get the Wolfe praise he has some cool ideas, but everything else is subpar. I don't think I'll be reading anything from him again.+

𓀐 @uyHEbmw+: I just reread Mistborn. It's been a few years since I read it, but it was one of my first modern "adult" fantasy novels. I remembered it being better. With all the emdashes and "it's not x -- it's y" in the book, if it came out today I'd start a witch hunt. I guess this book was in the training data. For the book being 500 pages, the side characters feel simplistic and made of cardboard; everyone has only a couple defining desires. I'd forgotten all the side characters except Breeze, Sazed, and Kelsier. The plot itself is probably the best part, and it's what I remembered the most from before.+

𓀐 @v8Jb*y3*: Reading The Last Wish (Witcher). Not sure why my impression going in was that Geralt is an anti-hero because he's the most morally black and white character I've read in a while. He also seems to have zero agency in several of the stories, the plot just sorta happens to him and then something solves the central conflict and he moves on. Idk it's been fine so far but I'm probably not going to read the next book.+
